In Which I May Get Some Direction
Two posts in one day, madness! But I have to work some stuff out, and that is easiest to do by writing it out for y'all (probably behind a cut tag by the time I'm done, I'd be surprised if it is interesting to people who aren't me.
So, I have been toying with the idea of getting back on the actuarial exam wagon, in part because I have just forgotten so much of just about everything that used to be in my brain and don't know how to get most of it back, but studying for exams I think I do know how to do. And there are study guides I can follow and then the actual exams for some objective measure of competency, which I could surely use.
Today, I came across the receipt for the first exam I took back in 2004. With the information off of that I was able to find my score on soa.org (I'm so glad they have me in their records!). I thought I had taken two exams back in the day, but apparently it was just one (I know I was studying for the second one, but if I had registered for it it would have been for shortly after Katrina) and the system has changed since then so I think I will be better off taking it again (it might have different label and I'm pretty sure a different scoring system, now). And I could use the review.
So, I could register for the exam in November. It's at least 12 weeks from now, which should be enough time to prepare. $200 to register, plus a similar amount for study materials, probably. If I'm going to do it I should register soon and figure out how to get that studying done.
Which is the sticking point. The office is (a) a mess and (b) never really intended to be used for studying, we had it optimized for H to work from home. It was pretty close to the bottom of my mental prioritized Rearrange the House Plan and has consequently been catching quite a bit of clutter that I wasn't ready to deal with for one reason or another. Getting it into shape to study in - let's just say I have less confidence in my ability to do that than I do in getting ready for the exam.
Working at the coffee table out on the patio might work. And there's always the library, and possibly the coffee shop down the street. Getting out of the house might be the best option, actually. That will require actually getting dressed more often than I currently manage, but that's not entirely a bad thing.
Hm, I am half convinced I can do this. I think I'll sleep on it, but I might be onto something.
