My folks are involved in the Martinez Home Tour again this year, Mom's docenting a house and Dad organized the bus routes, so I went with Mom this morning so she could see the rest of the tour before she started working. I like seeing the historic elements of the houses and checking out how people decorate them - my current decor is Early 21st Century Squalor, but I like having the ideas there for when I get burst of energy and Do Things Around the House.

But the excitement came before that.

I decided to take the Volvo because I haven't driven it since the last streetsweeping day, so about 3 weeks. I didn't realize until I got going that it was waaaay low on gas - the little Hey You're Low on Gas light came on, which I've never seen before and didn't know I had. So I went to my friendly neighborhood Shell station, pulled up to the pump, opened the little door over the gas cap and (this is the exciting part) found a WASP'S NEST! BUILT INTO MY CAR! WTF, WASPS??!!

Fortunately, it has been long enough since I last bought gas for that car (January, according to my records) for the wasps to build the nest and all hatch and fly away except for one lonely and forlorn wasp that couldn't figure out how to get out of the little door. Even after I had it open the poor bug took a while to actually escape. I was able to poke at the empty nest with a crescent wrench to get it out of there, and wasn't stung, so yay.

Then my glasses fell apart so I had to stop and buy superglue after I picked Mom up, but that wasn't nearly as adrenaline-filled.

The tour was good, especially the one housewith a beautiful view from it's backyard, we ate lunch at Luigi's Deli which has an awesome selection of soft drinks, definitely a place I will go back to when I am wandering downtown Martinez (as occasionally happens for various events), now my feet hurt and I am just going to sit here and catch up on the hours and hours of television that have somehow accumulated on my DVR and not think about where wasps may decide to colonize next.

My husband has a non-running 1966 Lincoln Continental sitting in our driveway. Wasps keep building nests inside the doors and the bumper. They die off in the winter and he knocks the nests out, but they come back every year.

there's some talk now of selling this car which would be nice.
