So, a couple-three weeks ago I got this call from a recruiter. They had come across my resume at the Society of Actuaries website and wanted to know if I'd be interested in submitting it for a position in Monterey. We talked about how I wasn't really looking for a job right now, but what the hell. A few days later they call again to say that the company thought I'd be a better fit for Underwriting, would I be interested in that? I read the job description and decided that I would be. Last week I had a phone interview with HR, and they said I should hear by the end of this week if they wanted a F2F.

Monday I got a call that they want to meet with me and can I come down on Thursday? Henry and I decide to bring the dog with us and have a bit of a holiday.

Now, the car has not been serviced in any way in a really long time - we bought new tires last fall after a flat, but I can't even remember when the oil was last changed. So H dropped it off at Big O on Wednesday morning, picked it up at 5:30 and we headed off. On the way to the gas station, he remarked that it seemed to be taking longer to shift, but the tachometer looked reasonable to me. Filled up the tank, H topped it off, and we were off. With the check engine light on.

Of course, the first thing we do after coming out of the gas station is cross a bridge, so there's no way to pull over and check the fuel cap, but after driving a bit we did. A few times. Light still on. Grumble, mutter, but we have to get to Monterey. Mapquest's directions to La Quinta were atrocious, but we finally made it there by about 9:30. Luckily, the night front desk guy was happy to collude with us in allowing Walter to stay even though the policy is pets <25 lbs.

By then we were starving and most everything was closed...except for the Mucky Duck. So we went there and seriously bailed on the diet with burgers and fries and beer. Yum.

On the way, we passed a car that straddled the median just passed the flattened a signpost in a pool of gasoline. We passed it again minutes later, because of course we were lost, and a fire trick was already there scattering absorbent stuff. Whew.

Stopped to get gas the next morning so I'd have an accurate receipt for mileage reimbursement, hoping that the check engine light would go off. No such luck. But, I made it to the interview on time. Talked to the HR rep for about an hour, and the VP of Underwriting and Marketing for another. Forgot about the reimbursement. The recruiter had told me that there would be an assessment of some sort, but they didn't ask me to take anything.

I honestly have no idea how the interview went. The HR portion was practically identical to the phone interview, and the VP talked a lot more then I did, so there' no telling what impression I made.

Which is fine. I don't really know what to hope for - if they make me an offer I will most likely take it and be happy about it. The work sounds like it would suit me, living in Monterey would be fantastic. But if they pass on me, that would be okay, too. I'm kind of tired of moving, and I'm not really anxious to be working.

Anyway, after the interview we walked 2 miles down the Monterey Rec. Trail to Fisherman's Wharf, with a slight detour for a little beach time. Walter's first time in the Pacific! He was a little unsure about the waves, but a big fan of smelly things that have washed up on shore. Lunch was a crab quesadilla, fish & chips, and key lime pie. Oh, and a sampler cup of "Monterey Clam Chowder". Yum!

The 2 miles back gave me a blister and some sunburn, but overall it was worth it.
